Donuts versus Bagels

Many people go to Dunkin’ Donuts for breakfast, grabbing a bagel and thinking that they are going for the healthy alternative to donuts. What they don’t realize is that they are in fact choosing the wrong option!

Most people think that bagels are healthier than donuts–after all, what could be the harm in condensed bread versus a sugar laden fried pastry? Well, that’s just it, bagels are oversized and very dense–they also take longer for your body to digest. One bagel can be worth at least 5 pieces of bread. Even if you are going for the whole wheat or multigrain bagel, you’re looking at at least 300-450 calories. Add some cream cheese? You’re looking at 540 calories. A Dunkin’ Donuts multigrain bagel is worth 400 calories and a plain one is 370 calories.

How many calories are in one glazed donut? 220. While it is true that bagels have less sugar (3g in opposition to 9g), they do have more carbohydrates (71g in opposition to 20g). The biggest issue with bagels is that they come paired with cream cheese or something else.

Of course, many people may look at bagels as the better option based on amount of sugar and fat in donuts. If you are someone who is looking for carbohydrates in your diet, perhaps bagels are the better option. However, you should try to limit the amount of cream cheese (less than two tablespoons) and you should not have one every day. Store brand bagels can be healthier than those from Dunkin’ Donuts. Some brands have bagels running at 120 calories a piece.

If toast is too plain for you, try English Muffins! Oh, speaking of muffins…

One reduced fat blueberry muffin from Dunkin’ Donuts is worth 450 calories with 10 grams of fat and 86 grams of carbohydrates.

And that’s why I eat a banana or a boiled egg for breakfast…

Thanks for the info, though. That was really enlightening! I knew that bagels weren’t as healthy as we used to be told back in the 90s, but that’s just ridiculous.

Oatmeal!! You can not go wrong with oatmeal. I add a little almond butter and a little honey and I have a fabulous breakfast that lasts all morning and is around 350 calories. It’s wonderful and filling and so good for me 🙂 I think I’ll stick with that.

We recently found some bags of baby bagels at 120 calories each. I grabbed a few for the freezer. Love the bagel taste, and now I don’t have to cut each one in half and end up wishing for the rest of it.

  4. i don’t often go to those places, maybe 3, 4 times a year. still, this was a bit of an eye opener. next time: donuts!

I’ve been seeing a few articles saying that donuts are better than bagels because they have a lot of carbohydrates and calories. However, if you look closer than just the numbers, you might change your mind. A bagel offers a source of complex carbohydrates that will slow digestion and make you feel fuller and be satisfied for quite sometime, especially if you add the cream cheese (not that you should add a lot of cream cheese, but it will slow digestion and your hormones will tell your brain that you are full because of the fat). In addition, there will be more fiber in the bagel than the donut that will make you feel fuller, etc.

I donut, conversely, will make your blood sugar skyrocket because it is made of simple sugars that digest rapidly. Then your pancreas will go into hyperdrive and produce a ton of insulin to get the massive amount of sugar in the bloodstream into the cells and then you may dip down into hyperglycemia because you may have produced too much insulin because of all that sugar. Then you will be hungry again soon after and go for another…

    Something to consider.

I agree with MO. The multigrain bagels give you a lot of needed carbs to keep your body running. The complex carbs make you feel fuller longer… one example is – my local news station did a study about donuts vs bagels. They concluded that the people that had donuts for breakfast (around 8am) were searching for snacks at 10am. The people that had a bagel (multigrain to be specific) lasted until lunch time (around 12pm) and weren’t persuaded into snacking before lunch.

For those of you that think that the article is shocking, I think you should look up “Food, Inc.” I’m more worried about how my food is handled BEFORE it hits the supermarket than how many calories my bagel has. Did you know that for every package of ground beef, there is 79% meat and 21% filler. They need to put filler (that has been treated with ammonia) in the ground beef to kill the bacteria because the ground beef also contains feces. Also, in one hamburger patty, there’s meat from THOUSANDS of cows. Scary, huh? I suggest everyone watch “Food, Inc.”

    Raw Food!!

  10. diabetes says:

Both are not a good option for a person with diabetes. I thinks oat meals, eggs, fruits, milk etc. are more healthier choices.

However, if you cannot control a doguhnut or a bagel, you can occasionally mcuh one or two.

Actually, nothing is forbidden for a diabetic.

  11. Richard says:

Wtf does fruit, eggs, oatmeal, or raw food have to do with bagels versus donuts? You morons need to stay on topic. Is the article called fruit versus donuts? I think we all know what is healthier so keep your dumb@ss comments to yourself. This is a comparison of two things and the common misconception of which is better…not a forum for what you dorks like for breakfast.

  12. Bethany says:

I like what Mo had to say and I have to say that it is very true, when I eat a bagel I am not hungry in the day until much later. When I eat a donut, I drag around and am hungrier later.

My friend is a doctor and he told me samething. Of course I belive him but above information is very helpful if you want to know the exact numbers. Thank you for your kind words. May be I will live little longer 🙂
