Hey Bostonians, are you ready for warmer weather? Boston summers are the best. Boston summers mean beach parties, Red Sox games, food festivals, fishing, and so much more…It’s a regular Smorgasbord of activity, except if you’re like me, you’re not looking your best, and the summer is actually a daunting reality. I’ve grown soft since winter, and it’s going to take some work to get this body beach ready.

I have roughly two months to lose 15 pounds, get my skin in order, update my wardrobe, update my hairstyle, and generally reinvent my tubby tuckus for swimsuit season. Like you, I wish I would have started sooner, but I didn’t, so I’ll have to make do with the time I do have. The following is an outline I created for myself, in order to ensure that by the end of June my rear end (and everything else) is ready for my bathing suit. I’ve been dreaming of a beautiful Boston summer all winter, but that doesn’t change the fact that the winter has kept me indoors and packing on the pounds. I’ve got a lot of work ahead of me.

Eating Healthy and Losing Weight

I’m going to start with a 7-day cleanse. Cleanses can really jumpstart weight loss, so I’m going liquid-only for 7 days straight. Don’t worry, cleanses are super healthy and good for you, so this is a good first step on my journal toward summertime wellness. It should also help me lose 5 – 10 pounds.

My diet is pretty standard. For the next two weeks, I’m going to avoid starches, sugars and non-essential fats. I’m going to eat mostly fruits and vegetables, but also lean meats and other healthy foods, such as healthy grains. Overall, I think this diet should definitely help me lose the pesky weight that has built up around my stomach and thighs.

Jumpstarting Exercise

I’m going to be honest – I haven’t exercised in a few months. For a while, I was jogging regularly, but then the polar vortex hit and I no longer wanted to leave the comfort of my warm house. With warmer weather on the horizon, I’m ready to dust off my running shoes and get back on the trail.

For the foreseeable future, I’m going to run four times a week. On Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays, I’m going to do Boston’s Long and Historic run, which is 3 miles and takes place on the trails along 2A. I’m sure I’ll see some of my fellow last-minute dieters out on the trails, as I often do around this time of year.

Getting My Skin Sunshine Ready

Winter has left my skin dry and cracked…That’s not exactly the fresh, youthful face I want for summer. In order to get ready to face Boston, I’m beginning a strict skincare regiment both at-home and at the estheticians. For the sake of full disclosure, I’ll admit that I have combination skin (both oily and normal).

In the mornings, I’m going to wash with a mild glycolic acid non-soap cleanser. Then, I’ll splash my skin with cold water. After breakfast, I’ll apply an oil-free moisturizer. I’m planning to avoid makeup for the time being – just until my complexion improves. At night, I’m going to apply a cream to my blemishes – something with retinol acids to help improve my skin’s appearance.

I’m not only improving my skin at home. I’m a semi-regular (it’s been too long!) at American Laser Skincare, and it’s there that I’ll take my skincare to the next level with clinical skin rejuvenation. The Boston clinic specializes in all sorts of skin rejuvenation therapies, including glycolic peels, which will help to reveal a more youthful glow to make skin.

New Hair, New Clothes, New Outlook

Just before the summer season starts, I plan to treat myself to a new summer wardrobe and a new hairstyle. I haven’t changed my long-hair look in over a year, so I’m excited to reveal a shorter, sexier style come June. I’m going to plan to get this cut during the first week of summer, as a treat for all the hard work I’ve put into my body.

Although I’m disappointed that I waited so long to jumpstart a healthier lifestyle, I am proud of myself for taking this first step. Of course, bikini season is a huge motivator, but so are the health benefits. I’m looking forward to breathing heavy after a long run and feeling physically fit and full on healthier foods. I’m ready to give up my love handles, in favor of sunshine. The allure of the beach is simply too much, and I’m going to be ready for it!
