Importance of Immunizations

by Lori Sciame August 20th, 2012 | Health Observance
Next to hand washing, immunizations (vaccinations) against disease have been one of the best advances in public health. Americans today enjoy much better health than ever before, due in large part to being vaccinated against sickness.

Because I have been a health educator for over 20 years, I firmly believe in the importance of receiving immunizations as recommended by the medical community.

Years ago, the following words would strike fear into the hearts of parents:  polio, measles, mumps, rubella, and whooping cough.

Today, thanks to timely vaccinations, children do not usually have to suffer from these life changing illnesses.  I remember having

Best and Worst BBQ Foods

by Dean Heller MD August 17th, 2012 | Ask the Doctor
I want to plan a summer barbeque for my family. Which foods are most healthy to cook for my entire family?

There are many choices for a barbecue, and some are healthier than others.  If you can make your potato salad with a vinaigrette, rather than mayo, and keep the skin on, it will be healthier.  I would also cook more burgers than hot dogs, as hot dogs are a processed meat, and not as healthy for you.  Also give diners a choice of healthier toppings; mustard is a healthier topping as it contains tumeric, a healthy Indian spice.

Furthermore, there are several sounds and sound combinations that are not fully mastered by a child until approximately 6 years old. Most of these can be diagnosed

August is known as National Immunization Awareness Month, commonly referred to as NIAM. Although it is not recognized by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), they do support the effort to bring awareness to the forefront of the importance of immunizations for all age groups. August is also a good time to remind parents to get the immunizations children will need for the school year.

States differ somewhat in what immunizations are required for children to enter school. It is best to contact your school district to find out what immunizations are required for your state. Most states

Parent or Best Friend?

by Lori Sciame August 13th, 2012 | Relationships
Your duties as a parent are crystal clear when your child is an infant. You provide food, shelter, and plenty of love. As your son or daughter grows, you begin to provide intellectual stimulation, and you have plenty of fun playing together.  Still, you remain a parental figure first and foremost.

It isn't until the late teen years that the notion of becoming best friends enters into your relationship. Although it may be tempting to begin treating your child more like a friend, resist the urge to do so for several important reasons.

First, scientific research has proven that a human's
