Gluten and Children

by Dean Heller MD June 21st, 2013 | Ask the Doctor
My son, who is 11, has chronic asthma, frequent ear infections, and is always missing school. He also complains of belly aches frequently. His doctor thinks he is allergic to gluten. He gave me some handouts on what foods to avoid, and he thinks this will help his asthma and the ear infections. Is that even possible, or is this doctor full of it, and should I find a new one?

You are obviously very concerned about your son, and I am sure your doctor is as well. He could very well be right about this. Although you will have

Treating Warts in Children

by Tom Seman MD FAAP June 19th, 2013 | Pediatrician on Call
I have a sixteen year-old daughter who is prone to warts.  Should we treat each one or just let them be?

Cardiac Stem Cell Therapy

by Dean Heller MD June 14th, 2013 | Ask the Doctor
My dad has a bad heart. Should we do this?

Your father has what doctors call a cardiomyopathy,

Study on Omega 3 Supplements

by Dean Heller MD June 7th, 2013 | Ask the Doctor
I take Omega 3 Fatty Acids from the vitamin store, but they make me burp up this fishy smell. I am 39, but I did have a heart attack about five years ago, and I have been doing really good since then. Should I continue to take these supplements?

Well, that is a very timely question, as there was a recent study that looked at a group like you, those who have a history of heart disease. With the standard dose of fish oil, 1 gm or less, there was not a significant benefit in people who already have a

Diabetes: It’s Complicated

by Editorial Team June 3rd, 2013 | Special Interest Section
Most people understand that diabetes is a serious, and even life-threatening disease. Some may even understand that, left untreated, it can cause blindness, or that it is closely linked to hypertension and even heart disease. But many don’t know, or understand, exactly why this is so.

The Diabetes Mechanism

There are two different types of diabetes. Type 1 diabetes, also known as juvenile diabetes, occurs when the pancreas stops making insulin – a hormone that helps your body use sugar for energy. With type 2 diabetes, the pancreas still makes insulin, but the body is unable to use it.

The affect
