Surgery and GERD

by Dean Heller MD April 20th, 2012 | Ask the Doctor
I have had reflux for many years, and I have tried all of the medicines. I am currently taking 2 medicines for reflux, and still have to take Tums 3 or 4 times a day, what should I do?

First of all, I assume that a gastroenterologist (stomach doctor) is giving you the 2 different medications for reflux, or GERD-gastroesophageal reflux disease. He likely also performed an EGD- or an upper endoscopy, to make sure there is not a more serious problem, which would be appropriate given the severity of your symptoms. Parkinson’s and Diet/Exercise

by Dean Heller MD March 30th, 2012 | Ask the Doctor
My father has Parkinson's disease. I have been trying to have him eat a healthy diet and to exercise. I think it is overall just good for him given his limitations at this time. Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder is characterized as a person believing that the way that they do things

by Dean Heller MD February 17th, 2012 | Ask the Doctor
My doctor says that I have to do a better job of watching salt intake, and take medication every day because my blood pressure is high when he checks it. I have no symptoms, and I feel really good, and just don't really want to take medication if I can avoid it. If I have no symptoms, then why should I be taking medicine?

Obviously, you don't know the facts about what doctors commonly call high blood pressure. They call it "the silent killer." The reason for this is that unless the blood pressure is very high, there are no symptoms associated with it.

Bladder Cancer in Men

by Lori Sciame February 6th, 2012 | Diseases
There’s one type of cancer that men don’t like to talk about – bladder cancer. Maybe it’s a touchy subject because it affects a bodily function; however, whatever the reason this type of cancer doesn’t get much press coverage needs to change. This is because thousands of men in the US are diagnosed with bladder cancer each year.

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) estimates that 56,000 men will learn that they have bladder cancer this year. This is at a rate much higher than women. In fact, according to information supplied by the American Cancer Society (ACS), “Bladder cancer is
