manThinking about improving one’s overall health can be overwhelming. Today’s overabundance of information, coming in from all directions, from TV to the Internet, can cause one’s head to spin. Many men ask, “how can I sift through all the do’s and don’ts to find out the best health information for me?”

First and foremost, one must skip advice that doesn’t come from a reliable source. For instance, should a man take advice from the local electrician on what cancer treatment to choose?  Although the electrician may be an expert in her field, the best place to search for information on cancer treatments would be from another source, such as a doctor at a nationally recognized clinic/hospital. Basically, trusting one’s own common sense on where to find health information is key.

Next, look for commonalities in the health information being presented.  An example of this has to do with being overweight.  Source after source  touts the fact that being obese has negative health consequences.  From the First Lady, Mrs. Obama, to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), to local health departments, comes the same message:  an obese man or woman should lose weight to be a healthier individual.  Another message that has been repeated in many ways from many reputable sources: exercise more for heart health, for mental health, and for overall physical health.

In addition, a man should establish a relationship with a medical professional. This means that yearly check ups are a necessity.  In addition, as a man ages, he should undergo all of the health screenings (tests) that his doctor recommends. While it may be tempting to skip the doctor and diagnose one’s own aches and pains, it is always best to seek sound medical advice.

Finally, rely on tips that have worked for generations of men.  Even Benjamin Franklin’s advice, “early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise,” has a kernel of truth to it. Translated into today’s language, it means “get a good night’s rest for mental clarity and physical well-being!

By taking these tips seriously, a man can learn to weed through the tons of health articles and news stories that circulate in 2013. In the end, with a little practice, any man should be capable of deciding which health advice to follow.

Five Tips to Improve a Man’s Health NOW

1.  Cut out negative health habits such as smoking and eating too much junk food.

2.  Build core muscles to prevent back injuries.

3.  Get enough sleep.

4.  Drink plenty of water, and eat a wide variety of fresh fruits and vegetables.

5.  FLOSS teeth regularly. As Dr. Oz states, “no matter how thoroughly or long you brush your teeth, you’re missing a good portion of their total surface. That’s like washing one armpit after a workout. But the dangers of skipping floss go beyond hygiene: The bacteria that linger can increase your risk of heart disease.”
