Problems with Roids

mean manSteroid abuse does not seem to be slowing, even though most have heard that this drug can have serious effects on a man’s health.  My question to any man is – why risk it, when the consequences of use can be deforming and even deadly?  Is it that important to develop super human strength?  After reading this article, I hope you agree it is more important to live a healthy and LONG life.

Steroids Defined

Simply put, anabolic steroids are a synthetic version of the male hormone, testosterone.  When used under careful supervision by a physician, steroids can actually improve a person’s health.  For instance, a man who suffers from a debilitating flare up of multiple sclerosis will certainly benefit from a regimen of steroids.  Other illnesses, such as sarcoidosis also require steroid therapy. On the contrary, steroids taken by men (illegally) to enhance strength, as well as the physique, can be detrimental to the body.

Negative Effects of Steroids

In a July, 2012 article entitled, “Drug Facts: Anabolic Steroids,” produced by the National Institute of Drug Abuse, the dangers of steroids are revealed. The author states, “abuse of anabolic steroids may lead to aggression and other psychiatric problems, for example. Although many users report feeling good about themselves while on steroids, extreme mood swings can also occur, including manic-like symptoms and anger (“roid rage”) that may lead to violence. Researchers have also observed that users may suffer from paranoid jealousy, extreme irritability, delusions, and impaired judgment stemming from feelings of invincibility.”

In addition to affecting the mind, steroids can cause major problems in the male body. For instance, long term use may cause a man’s testicles to shrink (low sperm count too).  In addition, a user may develop breast tissue.  These problems seem to negate the benefits of having muscular legs and arms, as well as a ripped core section.  Think seriously about it; most men want to have fulfilling sex lives, and while steroids may make a man look good in clothes, what about when the time comes to disrobe?  Most women are turned off by tiny testicles and man boobs!  (Crass, but I’m trying to make a valid point!)

It should also be noted that young males need to steer clear of steroids, as studies suggest that use can permanently stunt growth.

Addictive Substance?

Because drugs are such a hot button issue in the sports world, ESPN published a series of articles called, “Drugs and Sports” to address the issue.  In one section, the author addresses the idea of steroid addiction by stating, “recent evidence suggests that long-time steroid users and steroid abusers may experience the classic characteristics of addiction including cravings, difficulty in stopping steroid use and withdrawal symptoms.”

Alternatives to Steroids

If you’ve read this far, you may have realized just how dangerous steroids can be for a man’s health.  Because of this, you may wonder if there are reputable alternatives.  For the best answer to this question, consult your doctor; do not rely on those that push supplements online!
