Supplements for Brain Health

brainAs we age, we need to do everything we can to maintain brain health. Researchers are working diligently to find more ways to keep our aging brains healthy, but in the meantime, we can use nutrition to keep our brain function at optimum levels, as this has been shown to be our number one action to take for a healthy brain. Using the following supplements to be sure we have adequate amounts that keep our brains functioning properly is very important.

The first important supplement that we should be taking are B vitamins. The brain has to have glucose to function, and B vitamins help to produce the glucose. Look for vitamins B-12 and B-6, along with folic acid, riboflavin, and thiamin.

The next line of supplements we need for ideal brain health are antioxidants. We can find these in vitamin E, vitamin C, and some plant based extracts such as green tea extract. These antioxidants protect the brain from destruction due to toxins.

You will also want to include essential fatty acids, considered good fats, that you get from eating fish, vegetables, and nuts. Also called Omega-3 fatty acids, these fats are essential to the brains function according to an abundance of research and studies.

Most people have not heard of citicoline, but it is a very important nutrient that supports memory. It is made by choline, which is a B vitamin nutrient. This can be purchased as a stand alone supplement.

Remember that it is always best if we can get the necessary nutrients from the foods we eat. It is not always possible with our busy lives, so do consider supplements if you feel you may be deficient. Speak with your doctor if considering adding them to your diet, especially if you are taking prescription medicine. You will want to be sure that none of them may interact in a bad way with medications.

Aside from these brain healthy supplements, be sure that you also get plenty of sleep and exercise. The combination of the supplements and other good habits will assure that your cognitive functions remain healthy, and that you have superb mental clarity.
