Essential Fatty Acids

Essential fatty acids work in almost every function of our body. They help maintain healthy heart and arteries, stabilize moods, keep skin fresh and young, and keep cell membranes working properly. These essential fatty acids must be obtained through diet, as the body cannot synthesize them. A deficiency in essential fatty acids may cause drying up of the skin, glands and heart and circulatory system, and may affect the immune and reproductive system. Eskimos, who eat a diet high in omega-3, have a very low incidence of degenerative diseases. The two main families, the Omega-3 fatty acid and Omega-6 are both polyunsaturated hormone-like substances and have an important effect on immune function, smooth muscle function and inflammation. Omega-3 fatty acids are found in fatty, cold-water fish, flaxseed oil, and cod liver oil. There are other food sources, but they are not as high in fatty acid content. Many researchers feel that the best source of the omega-3 oil is the fish rather than the plant derived sources.

Most Americans eat enough Omega-6, or linoleic acid, but often it is not converted to a usable form because of metabolic problems caused by diets rich in sugar, alcohol, or trans-fats from processed foods. Omega-6 is found in found in supplements such as evening primrose oil, borage oil or black current seed oil.

Viagra

Viagra (sildenafil citrate) is a drug that is used to treat erectile dysfunction, or impotence, just like generic Cialis. Since its introduction in 1998, Viagra has proven a huge moneymaker for Pfizer; according to that pharmaceutical company, 9 tablets of Viagra are dispensed every minute. Viagra works by increasing blood flow to the penis, though not helping with penis enlargement. Viagra’s effects can be felt within 30 minutes of taking a pill, the effects can last up to 4 hours, and Viagra can be taken as much as once per day.

Viagra has become a part of popular culture, with endorsers ranging from baseball star Rafael Palmeiro to former senator and presidential candidate Bob Dole. Wall Street legend Ace Greenberg of Bear Stearns was such a fan that he set up a multi-million dollar charity to buy Viagra for poor men who couldn’t afford it. The dark side of Viagra’s popularity is the endless flow of Viagra span that afflicts email users. Still, its users probably think that a small price to pay. Though Viagra does not prevent sexually transmitted diseases, so make to have an std test.

Hysterectomy

A hysterectomy is the surgical removal of the uterus, usually done by a gynecologist. The two common surgical approaches to performing a hysterectomy are either via a laparotomy or trans-vaginally. Reasons for a hysterectomy include cancer of the cervix or uterus and excessive vaginal bleeding, especially in a woman who has either already had all the children she wants or is post-menopausal. Hysterectomies have had a controversial past; during the 19th century, women were given hysterectomies as a treatment for psychological problems since hysteria was thought to originate in the uterus.

Aging

Sir Francis Bacon might have been right when he said that life span was determined by how quickly one used up one’s personal store of “vital spirits” One of those “vital spirits” that gets used up is the telomeres. Telomeres get shorter with each cell division. It is believed by some researchers that they become so short that the cell can’t divide anymore. The cell then becomes vulnerable to damage and decay. In scientific terms, the “vital spirits” might be a biological program that runs to only a certain length of time. To prove this cells taken from long lived species when put in a petri dish divide longer than cells of short lived species. It is like there is a clock in that cell tick, tick, ticking only so many times until that cells dies.

Although at present there isn’t anything we can do about this biological clock, the next theory of free radical damage is one which we can have some control of. The theory that is now widely believed is that oxygen molecules become electrically charged. They then can melt part of the cell membranes and damages genetic material. Free radical damage it is believed can be controlled with certain vitamins namely vitamin C and vitamin E are effective when used together. Studies in November 2004 suggest that vitamin E should not be at 400 mg. strength, but instead should be at 200 mg.

Restricted calorie intake by 60% in laboratory mice has caused them to live 50% longer. These mice though show extreme agitation at feeding time because their bodies are requiring more food. This option although viable is not one that is unrealistic because people will be hungry all of the time.

In one study of a hundred nursing-home residents 72 to 98, just ten weeks of weight training more than doubled the participants muscle strength and increased their walking speed and their ability to climb stairs. It seems that exercising seems to induce many of the effects scientists have been trying to deduce using other experiments.

Another theory on reducing aging is to increase oxygen intake which can be done with the Sequal Eclipse .

Benefits of Vitamin C

Could vitamin C be the wonder vitamin of the ages? The following maladies are improved by taking vitamin C: cancer, colds, gum disease, heart disease, allergies, cataracts, migraines, memory loss, gallstone formation and hay fever. The list is so conclusive that it appears to be the chant of a snake oil salesman for the one product that helps whatever ails you. It is effective as an aid in so many of these diseases because of its antioxidant properties. It prevents the effects of free radicals which are cell-damaging molecules. Vitamin C is also effective because it boosts ones immunity. Vitamin C is effective in lessening inflammation. Inflammation partly causes gum disease, heart disease, as well as allergies and hay fever.

Heart disease is helped by taking vitamin C. Vitamin C when taken with vitamin E combines to prevent oxidation of cholesterol. This then prevents the plague which travels in the coronary arteries. HDL known as the “good” cholesterol increases its levels when vitamin C is taken.

The lens of the eye can become damaged from (UV) light as well as from smoke. Exposure from (UV) light as well as smoke can effect the formation of cataracts. Vitamin C has been shown to keep the lens from being damaged from these effects.

Vitamin C is found naturally in citrus fruit such as oranges, mangoes, limes, lemons, and grapefruit. Other fruits high in vitamin C include: cantaloupe, guava, mangoes, papayas, peaches, persimmons, pineapples and fresh strawberries. One can never overdose on vitamin C by eating the above fruits. Vitamin C tablets are available in many strengths.
