Embrace Differences: Enrich Your Life

by Lori Sciame December 31st, 2012 | Relationships
As a college student advisor, I meet a wide variety of people.  For instance, I advise one student who moved to the Midwest from Pakistan, one student who hails from the worn-torn part of Serbia, and one student from the projects of Chicago.  Although each of these individuals has vastly different life experiences from myself, I have connected with them not only as someone who can assist with educational and career goals, but also as someone they each consider a friend.

My love of all people, including those of different religions, cultures, and ethnic backgrounds, goes back to

Winter Workout Foods

by Dean Heller MD December 28th, 2012 | Ask the Doctor
I live in Rochester Minnesota, and we have already started our long winter.  I usually run outside unless it is very cold.  In the winter, I sweat much less than when I run in the summer.  I like it, but I feel like I am not getting as good of a workout.  What do you think about that?

That is a great question.  There are the usual problems with drinking alcohol.  Of course, you should not drive a vehicle after you are drinking, as it impairs your judgement.  You may also experience a "hangover."  For this you should just make sure to hydrate well while you are drinking, as well as the next day.  There are specific problems related

Refuse to Abuse

by Lori Sciame December 20th, 2012 | Medication
Prescription medications need to be treated as what they really are - controlled substances.  This has become especially important now that millions of Americans take drugs every day for a myriad of health conditions.  It is a simple truth - prescription medications fill kitchen cupboards, medicine cabinets, and even women's purses in all areas of the country.  Instead of treating these substances nonchalantly, more care needs to be taken to not abuse them in any way.

At the college where I teach, we have undertaken a campaign to educate students and faculty alike about the importance of refusing to abuse
